The Village

Welcome To Korakades, the peaceful village that stands as a lookout over southern Corfu. Built on the 121 meters elevation, our village offers a unique sense of tranquility and safety, with the endless view stretching from the Ionian Sea to the picturesque coves of Petriti and Boukari.
The settlement is essentially the historic center of the area, as the residents, following past landslides, mainly relocated to the coastal Petriti. In Korakades, however, the spirit of the place remains alive, offering visitors an authentic experience.

History & Name

The roots of Korakades stretch back through the centuries, with the first references dating as early as 1652. Our history is closely connected with the Ionian and the danger.

The Birth: According to local tradition, the village was founded by former Saracen pirates who were seeking a safe and remote location to settle, while keeping watch over the movements at sea.

The Name: The most widely accepted explanation for our name comes from the crows that nested on the hill. This connection with the majestic bird gives an air of mystery and honors the atmosphere here, especially at dusk.

The Relocation: Due to the severe geological problems, a large part of the population was relocated and created the new settlement of Petriti, which is now the vibrant harbor of the area. However, the heart of the village, with its old stone houses and church, still stands, waiting to tell its story.
